Authorities on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, released the 911 recording of an armed father who fatally shot a gunman during an October 15 attack at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, called emergency services as he witnessed the 16-year-old shooter, identified as Griffin J. John II, firing a weapon at a truck and scaling the school's fence. The audio captures Giamanco informing the dispatcher that he has a gun and will shoot the suspect.
Giamanco, a local carpenter, told Oregon Public Broadcasting that he was driving home for lunch when he saw a teenager in black clothing fire a shotgun at a pickup truck and climb into the school property. In the recording, the 911 operator instructed Giamanco not to do anything and wait for an officer to arrive. Giamanco replied that he was "about to go kill this kid." He retrieved a .40-caliber handgun from his truck and entered the building through a shattered window.
Inside a special needs classroom, the gunman killed three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher. Another student was critically injured, and teacher Becky Drury was hospitalized after being struck by a shotgun blast that nearly severed her left hand. Giamanco reported seeing a teacher struggling with the shooter before he fired at the teenager. When the gunman reached for his weapon again, Giamanco shot him twice more. Giamanco later expressed regret for not arriving earlier to save the victims who died.
Police and President Donald Trump credited Giamanco's actions with preventing further casualties. The shooting resulted in the deaths of four victims and the perpetrator. The 911 call release provided documentation of the interaction between the dispatcher, who requested Giamanco wait for police, and the bystander who chose to intervene.
Recovery efforts for the injured and the community response continue. Police stated Giamanco was carrying his handgun legally in his vehicle at the time of the shooting. The 16-year-old shooter is dead. Community members have established a makeshift memorial for the victims at the school site.
