Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens. CNN projected the victory for El-Sayed, a progressive candidate who will move on to the general election in November to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers.
The candidates sought the seat currently held by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is retiring. The primary campaign was characterized by El-Sayed as featuring "intra-family squabbles" between the progressive and moderate wings of the party, with Stevens receiving unofficial backing from Democratic leadership during the race while El-Sayed was supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
With 99% of the votes counted, El-Sayed held 48.5% of the vote compared to 47.5% for Stevens, a margin of fewer than 15,000 votes out of more than 1.5 million cast. Following the projection, Stevens congratulated El-Sayed and offered her support for the general election. Outgoing Senator Peters also called for party unity, stating that El-Sayed needs to "immediately" begin making inroads with the broader Democratic Party.
Republican nominee Mike Rogers issued a statement following the results, characterizing El-Sayed as an "extremist" whose policies would make the state less safe and less affordable. Rogers alleged that El-Sayed’s platforms would lead to tax increases and criticized the Democrat for campaigning with individuals who have made controversial remarks about the September 11 attacks. El-Sayed defended his record and criticized Republican messaging that used his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, as a tactic he condemned.
The victory by a progressive candidate over an incumbent-style moderate establishes a precedent for the 2026 primary season, following similar results in other districts. In Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, state Rep. Donavan McKinney, a democratic socialist, defeated incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar. These results suggest a shift in candidate preference within the state's Democratic electorate that could influence future party platforms and legislative priorities in Washington.
The general election will determine whether Michigan remains a Democratic-held seat or flips to Republican control. Former Vice President Kamala Harris has already begun fundraising for El-Sayed’s campaign, while Republican groups like the Senate Leadership Fund have started releasing advertisements targeting him. Voters will make the final decision on November 3, 2026, when El-Sayed and Rogers face off in the general election.
