Amazon reduced its workforce within its artificial general intelligence (AGI) group on Wednesday. An Amazon spokesperson stated that the cuts are part of an effort to "sharpen our focus on the initiatives that matter most" and move faster on key projects. The company did not disclose the specific number of employees affected by this round of layoffs.
The job cuts reportedly impact teams led by Adeeb Shanaa, vice president of AGI data services, and Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information. This workforce reduction follows the consolidation of the AGI organization under senior vice president Peter DeSantis in December, a move that integrated AI development with silicon and quantum computing divisions.
These layoffs follow a larger restructuring in January, during which Amazon eliminated approximately 16,000 positions globally. The company has seen recent leadership changes in its AI departments, including the departures of AGI head Rohit Prasad late last year and AGI Lab head David Luan in February. Despite the staff reductions, Amazon stated that building large-scale AI models remains a top priority.
