A 57-year-old woman in Florida died over the weekend after a tree fell through her roof during Hurricane Isaias. Jenn Biggs Williams, who worked in human resources, was identified as the storm's first known fatality. Her husband, Joey Williams, reported that the couple had briefly stepped outside to photograph the sky before returning indoors, at which point the tree crashed into their living room.
The incident occurred as the hurricane produced winds reaching 100 mph. Joey Williams stated he was able to escape the debris, but his wife remained trapped. Despite his attempts to seek help from a neighbor and emergency services, weather conditions delayed the rescue. Responders informed Williams that their ability to assist was limited by the intensifying storm.
Emergency crews eventually reached the home, cut through the fallen tree, and recovered the body. A coroner’s office was called to the scene. In separate incidents, storm-related deaths have reached at least four, including a death in Birmingham, Alabama, confirmed by the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency director.
Hundreds of thousands of people are currently without power across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama. Additionally, the storm has disrupted holiday weekend travel across the Southeast. The specific dollar amount of property damage across the affected states has not yet been reported.
Moving forward, the storm continues to present a threat of flooding across the Southeast as it weakens over Alabama. Emergency management agencies in affected counties are monitoring conditions and managing rescue resources. Residents in these areas may see continued power outages and travel delays through the remainder of the holiday weekend. Specific court dates or legislative deadlines related to the storm response were not reported.
