A magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred in the Andes region of Peru on Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of at least six people. Civil defense authorities reported that the seismic event originated near the city of Sicaya, located in the Huancayo province.
The earthquake caused structural damage to buildings and homes in the mountainous region. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the affected areas to search for survivors and assess the extent of the damage to infrastructure and local communities.
Peru is located in a seismically active zone known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Local officials have not yet released the identities of those killed or a final count of total injuries as recovery efforts continue in the high-altitude province.
