A fire at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar in Bangkok on Monday resulted in the deaths of 33 people and left 15 others critically injured. Among the deceased were four members of the 11-person indie band Thotsakan: vocalists Nahathai Satjalert and Thitiwat Kaewkanha, keyboardist Pruttipong Phutmon, and drummer Nathaphat Thammanitha. Band leader Athipat Wichan and guitarist Chanate Trasing were among the survivors.
Survivors reported that the fire spread rapidly across the stage area, causing a power failure and immediate chaos. Guitarist Chanate Trasing stated he initially mistook the smoke for stage effects before noticing a burning plastic odor and fleeing. Athipat, who sustained injuries to his head and arms, was off-stage when the blaze began and reported difficulty finding an exit due to the flames.
Thai authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and potential negligence. Survivors and witnesses alleged that some doors were locked and emergency exit signage was insufficient. The incident has led to renewed public discussion regarding the enforcement of fire safety regulations at entertainment venues across the country.
Athipat Wichan expressed grief over the loss of his bandmates and his girlfriend, Nahathai Satjalert, during funeral services held this week. He called for higher safety standards at performance venues to prevent future incidents. While Athipat indicated plans to eventually continue the band, other members stated they are currently evaluating their future in live performance due to safety concerns.
