Berlin police are searching for a man suspected of driving a car into a crowd during the city's Christopher Street Day LGBTQ+ pride parade on Saturday. One person died and at least 16 others were injured in the incident, which occurred near the Tiergarten park. Authorities reported that several victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
Berlin police spokesman Florian Nath stated that investigators have identified a primary suspect who remains at large. Nath informed reporters that the suspect is a Berlin resident previously known to authorities and described the individual as having ties to local Islamic circles. Police have not released the suspect's name as the manhunt continues.
The event, which is one of Europe's largest pride celebrations, was canceled at approximately 10:15 p.m. following the incident. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the event as an attack on a free society and expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation. Before the crash, hundreds of thousands of participants had gathered for the parade and rally at the Brandenburg Gate.
