A man was injured on Monday after being struck and thrown by a bison at a campground in Yellowstone National Park. The individual, identified as a grandfather visiting the park, was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the encounter.
The man stated that the bison did not exhibit signs of aggression before the attack. He reported that he was at the campground when the animal targeted him, lifting him into the air and dropping him. He noted that the impact with the ground caused the primary extent of his injuries.
National Park Service officials have previously issued warnings regarding wildlife proximity, noting that bison can be unpredictable and are capable of running three times faster than humans. Park regulations require visitors to remain at least 25 yards away from large animals such as bison and elk. The current condition of the injured man has not been released.
