Bodum USA has issued a recall for approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers due to a risk that the glass carafes may break unexpectedly, causing burn injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on Thursday, Oct. 29, after the company received reports of glass containers shattering during use. The recall involves 8-cup and 12-cup models with replaceable glass carafes sold under various brand lines.
The CPSC reported that the carafes are susceptible to breaking if they are already damaged or cracked. Such damage can occur when consumers use metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee inside the glass container. The manufacturer, a New York-based importer and subsidiary of a Danish-Swiss firm, has received 70 reports of carafes breaking, which resulted in 48 reported burn injuries to consumers.
The affected products were sold nationwide at major retailers including Target, Walmart, and home goods stores, as well as online through Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Bodum’s website. The items were available for purchase between 1974 and October 2026, with retail prices ranging from approximately $15 to $65. Impacted model names include Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya. The recall number is 27-055.
This recall affects millions of households and coffee drinkers across the United States who have purchased Bodum-branded French presses over the last five decades. Specifically, owners of the 5.9 million units sold since 1974 are advised to change how they prepare coffee to avoid potential injury. The scale of the recall covers nearly 6 million units that were distributed through the country’s largest retailers and online platforms for $15 to $65 each.
Consumers who own one of the recalled models are advised by the CPSC and Bodum to immediately cease the use of metal spoons or utensils for stirring coffee in these carafes. Instead of a financial refund, Bodum is offering a free repair kit that includes a plastic stirring spoon and a new warning label to remind users of the risks associated with metal utensils and damaged glass. A company representative confirmed to CBS News that refunds are not being offered to customers at this time.
The recall highlights safety risks and the importance of adhering to manufacturer warnings regarding material maintenance. For those with affected units, the next step is to contact Bodum USA toll-free at 888-879-8213 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s dedicated recall websites. Users are urged to inspect their carafes for existing cracks and avoid using any that show signs of damage.
