Officials in Hebei province confirmed they verified footage showing individuals dipping the vegetables into a solution before transporting them by truck.
The investigation began after an environmental blogger released the footage last week. Formaldehyde is a colorless chemical and a known carcinogen that is strictly prohibited for use as a food preservative in China. State media reported that police have taken legal action against the individuals identified in the video.
In response to the reports, officials are conducting spot checks at markets across the country to determine the extent of the practice and trace any affected vegetables. Local authorities in Kangbao county stated on Saturday that any discovered illegal practices would be handled strictly to ensure the safety of the vegetable supply. Beijing's Xinfadi market reported that its own investigation found no affected cabbages had entered its facilities.

The American Cancer Society notes that while high levels of formaldehyde exposure are linked to certain cancers, the effects of low-level exposure are less clear; however, the chemical remains banned for food use under Chinese law.
