Publicly traded semiconductor companies are projected to report a 133% year-over-year increase in second-quarter earnings, according to LSEG data. This group is expected to contribute approximately 44% of the total profit growth for the S&P 500. Despite these projections, the PHLX Semiconductor index has experienced significant volatility in July, declining 18% during the month after reaching an all-time closing high in late June.
Market analysts attribute the recent fluctuations to concerns regarding the sustainability of artificial intelligence demand and the influence of leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs). While the semiconductor index remains up 65% for the year, investors have recently reacted cautiously to positive news. For example, shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Samsung Electronics declined following their respective earnings reports despite both companies exceeding market profit forecasts.
Intel and Texas Instruments are scheduled to release their quarterly results this week, while Nvidia is expected to report in late August. Financial analysts note that while demand for AI-related chips remains a primary driver, other sectors such as industrial electronics, automotive, and wireless communications are also influencing market performance. Conversely, the market for handset-related chips continues to show signs of weakness.
