Staff at Heritage Church in McKinney, Texas, and Mountain City Church in Anchorage, Alaska, reported the theft and vandalism of Israeli flag displays during the week of the three-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. At Heritage Church, Pastor Len McLaughlin reported that hundreds of flags were pulled up and stomped into the ground. In Anchorage, Mountain City Church security footage showed five individuals removing more than 1,000 flags from the property in under 15 minutes.
Both churches had installed approximately 1,200 small flags to represent the number of victims killed during the 2023 attacks by the militant group Hamas. Heritage Church leadership stated the display was intended to show spiritual support for Israel, while Mountain City Church staff said the flags were part of a planned sermon regarding biblical perspectives on Israel. Both incidents occurred during overnight hours and have been reported to local police departments.
In McKinney, Pastor McLaughlin discovered the damage on a Tuesday morning and described the acts as showing "total disrespect." He noted that five community members, including employees from a nearby veterinary clinic, helped restore the display. In Anchorage, security director Serge DuShawLay reported that the flags were taken early Friday morning. Security footage showed younger individuals hiding behind trees and rocks as cars passed while they collected the flags and placed them in a vehicle.
The incidents affected the congregations of Heritage Church and Mountain City Church. Based on the reports, the scale involves the destruction or theft of at least 2,200 small flags across two states. For church members and local residents, these actions represent a disruption of religious and memorial activities intended to mark the deaths of approximately 1,200 people.
Church staff in both locations indicated they would notice a direct impact on their operations, as Heritage Church announced plans to expand security and Mountain City Church staff committed to replacing the stolen items. These events occurred as conflict in the Middle East continues.
The effects include the involvement of local law enforcement in investigating theft and vandalism reports. While no suspects have been identified in the Anchorage case, Heritage Church has filed a formal report and expressed a desire for the actors to be fined. No arrests have been reported as of early October 2026.
