The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search on Sunday for three individuals missing after a boat capsized in the San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island. The 20-foot vessel was carrying five people when it began taking on water on Saturday. According to authorities, the passengers were on the water to scatter the ashes of a family member.
Emergency responders rescued two individuals shortly after the boat sank. Those rescued were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Their current conditions have not been released.
The Coast Guard, along with local partner agencies, conducted a search covering approximately 140 square miles over the course of 22 hours. Assets involved in the operation included helicopters, patrol boats, and land-based teams. The Coast Guard stated that the decision to suspend the search followed an exhaustive effort to locate the remaining three passengers within the search area.
The names of the missing individuals have not been officially released, and the cause of the vessel's sinking remains under investigation. Weather conditions at the time of the incident were reported to include typical bay currents and winds.
