Chris Fall, the director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has departed from his role after three months. A spokesperson for the Department of Commerce confirmed the departure on Monday, noting that Fall had served in the position since April.
CAISI, an agency within the Department of Commerce, oversees the federal government's voluntary review process for advanced artificial intelligence models. During his tenure, Fall was involved in discussions regarding export controls and served as a primary liaison between the administration and the commercial AI industry. Fall previously served as a Department of Energy official during the first Trump administration.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Director Dr. Arvind Raman will serve as the acting director of CAISI while the department searches for a permanent successor. A Commerce official stated that Secretary Howard Lutnick intends to appoint a new director with expertise in AI technology in the coming weeks.
