U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday for a confirmation hearing to become the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The hearing focused on the role of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and Clayton's views on past elections and domestic operations.
During questioning by Democratic senators, Clayton stated that Joe Biden was certified as the President of the United States and denied being an election denier. However, he did not use the word "won" in response to several questions from Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) regarding the 2020 election results. Clayton's responses led to disagreements with committee Democrats over his suitability for the role.
The committee also addressed concerns regarding the ODNI's involvement in domestic activities. Senators questioned Clayton on reports that former DNI Tulsi Gabbard observed an FBI raid in Georgia at the request of the President. Clayton testified that he was unaware of those reports and noted that the ODNI's role is primarily focused on intelligence outside the United States.
Republican members of the committee, including Chairman Tom Cotton (R-AR), spoke in favor of downsizing the ODNI, describing the agency as "bloated." Clayton agreed that the office should focus on oversight rather than operations. The committee is expected to vote on the nomination early next week.
