E. Jean Carroll received more than $5.6 million in damages from Donald Trump on Monday following a pair of civil lawsuits, according to a court filing. The payment follows a 2023 trial in which a jury found Trump liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of Carroll stemming from an incident in the 1990s.
Trump's legal team had sought to delay the payment, arguing in court filings that he would face "irreparably harmed" if the funds were released while appeals were pending. Both a New New York district court judge and an appeals court denied the request for a stay after the Supreme Court declined to review the jury verdict.
In addition to this payment, Carroll was awarded $83.3 million in a separate defamation trial involving similar claims. Trump is currently appealing that verdict and has consistently denied the allegations, frequently characterizing the legal proceedings as a "hoax" on social media.
Roberta Kaplan, Carroll's attorney, confirmed the receipt of the initial $5.6 million in a statement on Tuesday. The White House referred inquiries regarding the payment to Trump’s personal legal counsel, who did not provide an immediate comment. Carroll has previously stated she intends to donate the awarded funds to charity.
