Court records filed in Manhattan federal court indicate that writer E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.6 million from Donald Trump. The payment concludes the financial obligation from a 2023 civil trial in which a jury found Trump liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of Carroll.
The $5.6 million sum covers the original $5 million jury award plus accumulated interest. The jury in that case determined that Trump sexually abused Carroll in a department store dressing room in the 1990s and later defamed her by denying the encounter and making disparaging remarks about her character.
The funds were held in a court-controlled account while Trump pursued appeals. Following the exhaustion of certain legal challenges regarding this specific judgment, the court authorized the release of the money to Carroll. Trump continues to deny the allegations and is currently appealing a separate $83.3 million defamation judgment awarded to Carroll in a second trial.
