Sweden-based freight technology company Einride AB announced on Tuesday its plan to deploy 500 Tesla electric semi-trucks within its North American fleet. The company stated the initiative will take place over the next two years, describing it as the largest rollout of heavy-duty electric vehicles to date.
The deployment is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and will be completed in phases through 2028. Einride intends to use the trucks to service freight corridors in California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Georgia for customers including Amazon. The acquisition of these vehicles will be funded through third-party solutions.
Einride reported that the addition of 500 Tesla trucks will triple the size of its current electric truck fleet. The company currently utilizes an AI-based monitoring system and stated it has logged more than 19 million electric miles globally during its seven years of commercial operations. According to Einride, this deployment is part of a strategy to convert approximately $800 million in potential long-term annual recurring revenue into active freight capacity.
For the logistics industry and its workers, the shift toward electric freight may lead to changes in operational routines and infrastructure needs. Tesla's director of semi-truck, Dan Priestley, stated that these electric vehicles can lower operating costs by reducing maintenance requirements and improving vehicle uptime—the amount of time a truck is available for work versus being serviced. While specific per-truck cost savings were not disclosed, these factors typically influence the pricing and efficiency of freight services which, in turn, can affect the costs of goods transported for retail customers.
The success of this 500-vehicle rollout will serve as a test case for the broader adoption of electric heavy-duty trucks in the North American market. If the phased deployment through 2028 meets the stated goals for cost reduction and reliability, it may set a precedent for other freight companies to transition away from internal combustion engines. The next major milestone for this project is the initial deployment of vehicles, which Einride expects to begin in September 2026.
