A 45-year-old gunman killed eight people in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening, October 9, 2026, before taking his own life. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah reported that the shooter was related to seven of the victims, while the eighth was a friend of one of the residents. Among the deceased were a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, and a pregnant woman.
The shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at a local residence. According to Chief Lorah, investigators recovered audio and video evidence of muffled gunshots from within the home just before two women arrived and began pounding on the door. The gunman exited the house and shot both women as they ran toward him before he returned inside. Arriving officers discovered the two women dead outside the property.
Police utilized a drone and a robot to clear the residence before entering. Inside, they found the bodies of the two children on the first floor, and two women and two young men in a stairwell. The gunman was found dead on the second floor from a self-inflicted wound. While a specific motive has not been determined, Chief Lorah suggested that mental health could be a factor in the investigation.
The incident also highlights the role of law enforcement technology in active shooter responses. The use of drones and robotic units allowed Erie police to survey the interior of the home before entering. The event has also led to the deployment of local support services.
Investigators are currently examining the cellphones of the two women killed outside the home to determine what prompted their arrival and whether they had prior knowledge of a dispute. Public memorials featuring candles, flowers, and stuffed animals have been established at the site as the community awaits the formal release of the victims' and shooter’s names. Local officials, including Mayor Daria Devlin, have pledged ongoing support for the families.
