Two families filed a lawsuit against Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, alleging that two infants were switched at birth 36 years ago. The legal action follows a 2022 DNA test taken by Jeremy Morrison, which indicated that the people who raised him were not his biological parents. Morrison later connected with Kyle Bylin, whose DNA matched Morrison's aunt, suggesting the two men were swapped following their births on January 26, 1988.
According to the plaintiffs, Morrison and Bylin were the only two children born at the facility on that date. Morrison told media outlets that the discovery explained physical differences he noticed between himself and his family members while growing up. The two families have reportedly met their biological sons, though Morrison and Bylin have not yet met each other in person.
Unity Medical Center released a statement acknowledging the "profound impact" of the situation but denied legal responsibility. The hospital stated that because the event occurred nearly four decades ago, medical and staffing records from that period no longer exist. The facility also noted that none of the medical staff involved in the deliveries are still employed at the hospital.
The hospital further stated that it has found no internal evidence to support the claim that its staff was responsible for the separation of the men from their biological parents. The lawsuit seeks to determine the circumstances of the alleged switch and potentially recover damages for the families involved.
