Federal agents searched a Beverly Hills mansion on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA). The property belongs to Stephen Cloobeck, a developer and former donor to Swalwell, who has denied criminal wrongdoing.
The search follows a series of federal probes that began after a woman accused Swalwell of twice sexually assaulting her, including while she was his employee. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April 2026 amid these and other allegations of sexual misconduct, which reportedly included sending unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos to three other women.
FBI spokesperson Lourdes Arocho confirmed that the agency conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region on Tuesday morning but declined further comment. Cloobeck, the founder of Diamond Resorts International, stated in April that he had cut ties with Swalwell. Cloobeck was arrested in May 2026 on charges of attempting to impede victim or witness testimony, to which he pleaded not guilty in August.
This federal investigation involves Eric Swalwell, a seven-term former lawmaker who represented California's 15th district, and Stephen Cloobeck, who contributed over $1 million to support Swalwell’s political career. The investigation spans multiple jurisdictions, with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and Los Angeles prosecutors also reviewing allegations. The Manhattan probe involves a 2024 report from a former staffer alleging rape at a New York City hotel. The FBI previously executed search warrants at Swalwell’s Washington home and seized his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport in August 2026.
Swalwell resigned his seat and ended a gubernatorial campaign in April 2026. He previously served on the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees and acted as a House prosecutor during the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump. While the FBI stated no arrests were planned for Tuesday, the affidavit for the search warrant remains sealed. Cloobeck's case regarding witness impediment continues following his August 2026 plea.
