Emergency responders from Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg worked Sunday to contain a wildfire in eastern Belgium that has consumed 3,000 hectares of land. The fire, which began Friday in the High Fens nature reserve, is moving toward the German border. The European Forest Fire Information System reported this as the largest wildfire in Belgian history, surpassing a 2011 blaze that burned nearly 1,400 hectares.
The fire follows a series of heatwaves across Europe that intensified drought conditions and dried out vegetation. While firefighters in the High Fens focused on the front line moving toward Germany, other regions faced similar challenges; officials reported two deaths from fires on the Greek island of Salamina and a blaze in Aragon, Spain, that destroyed 16,600 hectares.
Following a request for emergency reinforcements on Saturday, the European Union deployed three helicopters and two water-bombing aircraft to assist Belgian crews. The Belgian army and local farmers also joined fire brigades from across the country to establish defensive lines. Stephanie Ernoux, a spokesperson for the Wallonia regional administration, stated Sunday that the defensive lines protecting evacuated villages were holding.
For residents, the fire has caused immediate displacement and potential health risks from heavy smoke. The scale of the blaze—more than double the previous record—indicates a shift in the intensity of regional wildfires that local emergency services must now manage. Scientists attribute the increased speed and duration of such fires to human-caused climate change, which has made hot and dry conditions more frequent across the continent.
The fire’s movement toward the German border marks a trans-border environmental challenge that has already required the coordination of resources from four different nations and the European Union. While defensive lines are currently holding, the situation remains active. The next steps for the region involve monitoring the fire's trajectory and determining when air quality and fire containment levels will allow evacuated residents to safely return to their properties.
