Five people died and 17 others were injured after a roof and wall collapsed at a village home in China's southwestern Sichuan province. The incident occurred during a dinner party at a family courtyard in Xinbao village, located in Changning County.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the collapse was triggered by an excessive accumulation of rainwater on a temporary awning. The awning was reportedly secured tightly to a wall, and the weight of the water caused both the awning and the wall to give way during the event.
The gathering was a banquet held to celebrate the hosts' children entering college. Of the five fatalities, three individuals died at the scene, while two others died later at a hospital. The 17 injured individuals were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed if children or youths are among the deceased or injured.
The scale of the event highlights the physical risks associated with temporary structures during severe weather periods. Sichuan province had issued a heavy rain alert earlier in the week, specifically warning of geological disasters. For residents in the region, this event underscores the immediate danger posed by rainwater accumulation on non-permanent fixtures, such as awnings, which are common in rural courtyards. Such a collapse demonstrates how localized structural failures can occur even when the primary permanent residence remains standing.
As of August 19, medical staff are continuing to treat the 17 survivors at the hospital. Local authorities and state media have not announced specific dates for a formal investigation or new safety mandates for temporary structures following this incident. Residents in the Sichuan region remain under caution as heavy rain alerts were active at the time of the collapse. Future reports from state media are expected to clarify the ages and identities of the victims as the medical response continues.
