Health officials in Louisiana and Florida have reported a total of seven deaths linked to Vibrio, a group of bacteria that can cause severe infections. The bacteria occur naturally in warm, brackish coastal waters, with most human infections resulting from the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters.
According to the Florida Department of Health, exposure can also occur when open wounds come into contact with contaminated water. While Vibrio infections are historically associated with the Gulf Coast, Dr. William Schaffner, a professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, stated that the bacteria have been detected as far north as Massachusetts.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 80,000 people in the United States contract vibriosis annually. Of these cases, an estimated 52,000 are attributed to eating contaminated food. While many cases are not life-threatening, a specific species known as Vibrio vulnificus can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, a severe condition that destroys body tissue.

Dr. William Schaffner advised that individuals with liver disease or those who are immunocompromised should avoid eating raw oysters to mitigate risk. However, he noted that healthy individuals do not currently need to restrict their diets.
