Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-Fla.) stated on Thursday that country music performer Jelly Roll, whose legal name is Jason DeFord, is no longer welcome in his Florida Panhandle district. The statement followed a Monday night appearance by the singer as a guest host on ABC’s "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", during which he made jokes regarding President Trump’s weight and approval ratings.
During the late-night monologue, DeFord mentioned he had lost 300 pounds, comparing that amount of weight to "an entire Donald Trump." He further remarked that "most of the country wants to do the same thing" based on approval ratings and commented on the president's physical fitness. In response, Patronis wrote on the social platform X that the singer is "100% not welcomed" to the Panhandle and that he did not want to see the performer's bus on Interstate 10.
Patronis characterized DeFord as a "token" country star for California liberals and used the term "Trump Derangement Syndrome" to describe the singer's actions. On Tuesday’s episode of the show, DeFord responded to the criticism by joking about his standing relative to actress Rosie O'Donnell and stating that "any U.S. president should be able to handle a few jokes." While DeFord has generally remained quiet about his political affiliations, he previously spoke positively about a President Trump-hosted UFC event at the White House.
The scale of DeFord’s public influence includes his testimony before the U.S. Senate regarding the fentanyl crisis, where he described the drug's impact on his fans. The singer also gained national attention following a December pardon by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) for a 2005 robbery conviction. Patronis's comments did not detail specific legislative or law enforcement mechanisms to enforce a district-wide ban, and it is currently unknown if the artist will cancel future appearances in response to the statements.
