Lovina Hershberger Zook, a 23-year-old former member of a conservative Amish community, has established a social media presence with approximately six million followers. Zook, who grew up without access to computers or telephones, now produces digital content focused on Amish recipes and cultural traditions. Her transition from a technology-restricted lifestyle to a career as an online creator followed her departure from her faith community five years ago.
Zook was raised in a subgroup of the Amish where members spoke Pennsylvania Dutch and adhered to strict prohibitions regarding electricity, makeup, and modern entertainment. After completing the eighth grade, she worked as a schoolteacher earning $12 per day. According to Zook, she decided to leave the community after facing pressure to work at a sawmill due to low teaching wages and receiving criticism regarding her adherence to dress codes. She reported planning her departure for two weeks, which included oiling door hinges to prevent noise while leaving her family home at night.
Since leaving the Amish faith, Zook has adapted to modern technology, including the use of laptops and automobiles. Her online content includes tutorials on traditional hair styling, which she reported has received over 50 million views on TikTok, and cooking demonstrations for dishes such as "coffee soup" and "Amish cheeseburgers." She currently generates income through her social media activities and the sale of a self-published cookbook containing more than 230 recipes.
On a day-to-day level, the change involves a total shift in lifestyle and legal rights. Zook, who previously had no access to telecommunications, now manages a digital business and uses a personal vehicle. She has moved from a community where women were prohibited from smoking and all members were barred from drinking or using specific language, to a lifestyle where she makes independent decisions regarding her dress, speech, and career. This transition also impacted her familial relationships; while she remains in contact with her brother who also left the community, she expressed that she misses other family members whom she has left behind.
The case sets a precedent for how individuals from isolated or technology-restricted backgrounds may utilize modern platforms to monetize their cultural heritage. Zook's success in self-publishing and digital media demonstrates a model for how specialized traditional knowledge can be scaled for a global audience through contemporary technology. Zook, who is married to another former Amish community member, Eli, is scheduled to give birth to her first child next month, marking a new phase in her post-Amish life. Zook stated she intends to eventually open an Amish restaurant and market.
