Authorities announced on Monday that 14 individuals have been charged in connection with a cocaine trafficking ring operating out of two Penn State University fraternities. According to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, the operation primarily distributed cocaine to other Penn State students after cutting and packaging the drugs at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses.
The investigation identified two former students, Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, as the primary suppliers. Prosecutors alleged that the pair made regular trips to Philadelphia and New York to acquire large quantities of cocaine. The activity reportedly took place between approximately 2023 and 2024.
Of the 14 people charged, 13 were Penn State students at or near the time of the alleged activities. The final defendant, Paul Robinson, is the father of one of the students and faces felony charges for allegedly attempting to conceal evidence and obstruct the investigation. Attorney General Dave Sunday stated that the crew involved senior members, brothers, and pledges, noting that evidence suggests drug preparation was used as an indoctrination task for some pledges.
Agostino Abbatiello, Thomas Robinson, Mohammed Hurabi, and Lars Zeepvat face felony charges including corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity. Robert Zanolla faces felony conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility charges, while eight other individuals—Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman—are charged with misdemeanors.
The university community will notice immediate changes to campus life and Greek organization oversight. Penn State announced that Delta Upsilon has been placed on interim suspension, effectively halting its operations as a recognized student group. The university further clarified that it does not recognize Sigma Chi as an organization, stating that it operates outside of the school's official oversight. This distinction affects how the university manages disciplinary actions and safety protocols for its student population.
These legal actions may influence future policy regarding fraternity oversight and university liability for off-campus or unrecognized organizations.
