European officials stated these actions are intended to undermine security without reaching the threshold of traditional military conflict.
These developments occur as the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year. In addition to the airport incident, Western officials have cited cyberattacks, election interference, and misinformation as part of a broader Russian strategy. In the United States, the Justice Department recently stated it foiled a Russian plot to assassinate a dissident living in exile.
Russia has denied these allegations, with President Vladimir Putin characterizing the German airport incident as a "false-flag" operation staged by Ukraine or Western nations. The Kremlin has maintained that there is no proof of its involvement and has described the warnings as "scaremongering."
