A worker at Frankfurt Airport in Germany has died after contracting malaria in what public health officials describe as a rare outbreak linked to mosquitoes arriving on aircraft. Five other employees who also contracted the infection are currently receiving medical treatment. The airport operator, Fraport, confirmed the death and stated that the company is providing information to its workforce regarding symptom monitoring.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany’s federal disease control agency, reported that the outbreak initially involved four workers who fell ill between July 4 and July 6. According to the RKI, malaria in Germany is typically found in travelers returning from endemic regions, making transmissions within an airport environment an uncommon occurrence. The last recorded case of "airport malaria" at the Frankfurt facility occurred in 2023.
In response to the current outbreak, officials have installed traps throughout the airport to capture mosquitoes for laboratory analysis. Researchers intend to identify the species and geographic origin of the insects. The Frankfurt Public Health Department is leading the investigation into the transmission, while Fraport has encouraged employees to seek medical consultations if they feel unwell.
