Former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) stated on Friday, October 16, 2026, that he would accept the position of White House press secretary if offered. Writing on the social media platform X, Santos said that while he currently holds other employment, he would "jump to serve POTUS as press secretary in a heartbeat." The statement followed the announced departure of the previous press secretary, Katie Zacharia.
The vacancy occurred after Zacharia served five days in the role, which President Donald Trump noted was the shortest tenure for a White House press secretary on record. According to the president, he advised Zacharia to reconsider her position following a period of criticism. During her first briefing, Zacharia took three questions and identified herself as a lawyer; however, reports later indicated she had not passed the bar exam.
Before expressing his interest in the role, Santos criticized Fox News host Sean Hannity for his Thursday, October 15 interview with Zacharia. Hannity had questioned Zacharia regarding her legal credentials. Santos accused Hannity of judging others from a self-righteous position and encouraged his social media followers to unfollow the host. The two had previously disagreed during a 2025 interview following Santos's release from prison, where Hannity questioned Santos about repaying money related to his criminal convictions.
Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives in 2023 and was later convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He served three months of a federal prison sentence before President Trump commuted the remainder of his sentence in October 2025. Since his release, Santos was also banned for life from the prediction market platform Kalshi in August 2026 for failing to cooperate with an investigation into bets placed on the State of the Union address.
The scale of the impact involves the entire federal government's messaging apparatus. A change in press secretaries can alter how media outlets receive daily updates on policy, foreign affairs, and executive orders. For the approximately 330 million people in the U.S., the press secretary is often the most visible face of the administration's daily operations. A transition after only five days, as seen with Zacharia, creates a period of administrative turnover that may affect the consistency of official government responses to domestic and international events.
The next steps for the administration involve selecting a permanent successor to Zacharia. President Trump has not publicly responded to Santos's offer or named a new candidate for the position. While Santos expressed his willingness to serve on October 16, no formal interview or appointment date has been announced. The White House has not yet specified who will conduct daily briefings in the interim or when a formal nomination process will conclude.
