A U.S. Army battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, is offering eligible soldiers a four-day pass to play the video game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) as an incentive to reenlist. The program, announced by the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, applies to service members who sign new contracts between Aug. 1 and Nov. 14, 2026.
The incentive program was introduced to reach reenlistment goals for the 2027 fiscal year. According to a July 28 memorandum written by Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson, the battalion commander, the pass is timed to coincide with the anticipated release of the game in mid-November. A career counselor proposed the idea to unit leadership to develop incentives aligned with the interests of current service members.
Out of 130 eligible soldiers within the battalion, 20 have selected the GTA 6 incentive as of Aug. 19. To qualify, soldiers must reenlist for a minimum of two years and up to six years. Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, stated that the division led the Army in retention last year and that local commanders often use creative incentives, such as parking privileges or specific duty exemptions, to retain personnel.
The program highlights the concrete day-to-day methods local commanders use to address personnel needs during a period of reported challenges in retaining mid-career staff. While the Army offers large-scale financial bonuses that can reach tens of thousands of dollars, soldiers in this unit would notice the impact of this specific policy as a scheduled four-day absence from regular duties starting around Nov. 19, the date Rockstar Games has set for the game's release on Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
The use of specific pop-culture incentives sets a precedent for how military branches may attempt to connect with younger service members to maintain readiness. This development occurs as the U.S. military manages ongoing regional operations, including a months-long conflict in Iran and prolonged deployments for units like those aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The success of this local program will be measured against the battalion's fiscal year 2027 retention targets, with the current signup period ending on Nov. 14.
What happens next: The eligibility window for signing a reenlistment contract under this specific incentive remains open until Nov. 14, 2026. Once the game is released on Nov. 19, the exact dates for each soldier's four-day pass will be determined through coordination between the individual and their chain of command to ensure unit mission requirements are met.
