A consortium of six research institutions is establishing Georgia’s first Superfund research center to investigate the impact of environmental factors on toxic industrial sites. Supported by a $15 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the five-year project will focus on four Superfund sites in Glynn County. The research team includes scientists from Emory University, the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman College, and Texas Tech University.
The project aims to analyze the health effects of historical chemical exposures and develop methods to prevent future contact with contaminants. Researchers intend to conduct environmental sampling and create models to determine how rising sea levels and intensified storm surges may affect existing containment structures at these sites. Emory public health professor Noah Scovronick stated that the goal is to ensure ongoing remediation efforts remain resilient against changing weather patterns.
Brunswick residents have expressed concerns regarding floodwaters potentially transporting contaminants from former industrial plants, such as a pesticide facility located near residential areas. Community members met with researchers during the planning phases to ensure the studies address local questions about soil and water safety. While stormwater system improvements have occurred, residents like Semona Holmes reported that high tides and heavy rain continue to cause flooding in neighborhoods adjacent to the identified toxic sites.
