Wildfires in Indonesia burned approximately 95,000 hectares of land during the month of July, according to data released Tuesday by the country's forestry minister. This surge nearly doubled the total land damage recorded during the first six months of the year, a trend officials attributed to the intensifying El Niño weather pattern.
Forestry ministry data showed that 202,004 hectares (499,162 acres) were affected by fire between January and July 2026. This is a significant increase from the 107,465 hectares reported burned from January to June. Minister Raja Juli Antoni presented these figures during a parliamentary hearing, noting that by mid-August, the El Niño index had already surpassed levels recorded in 2015, the last period of a strong El Niño.
Despite the recent increase, the minister noted that the total area damaged remains lower than the 600,000 hectares burned during the same period in 2015. However, the current damage has already exceeded the levels recorded in 2019 and 2023. Antoni stated that the government had conducted weather modification operations in fire-prone provinces between February and July to mitigate the impact.
The intensify of the current weather cycle means that residents in fire-prone areas may see continued government interventions, such as weather modification operations, which were active through July. Indonesia’s weather agency expects the El Niño pattern to persist into early 2027. This long-term forecast suggests that agricultural workers, rural landowners, and local government budgets will face prolonged pressure to manage fire risks, particularly as the critical peak period for forest and land fires is expected to occur between August and September.
The reported doubling of burned land in a single month sets a precedent for how quickly weather patterns can accelerate fire damage despite mitigation efforts. The situation remains a primary focus for the forestry ministry as it compares current data against the 2015 benchmarks to gauge the effectiveness of current suppression strategies. Looking ahead, authorities are monitoring weather conditions through the end of the year, with the next critical milestones being the conclusion of the expected peak fire season in September and the projected end of the El Niño cycle in early 2027.
