An inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard on Thursday that William Chapman died of multiple traumatic injuries and animal interaction after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy stated that Chapman, a 24-year-old self-employed online trader, scaled two fences to enter the pen on a Saturday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene following physical contact with the animal.
The hearing disclosed that Chapman had a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous bouts of psychosis. While he was under adult mental health services in Doncaster, he was described during the inquest as "highly functioning and independent with no care requirements." The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Trust has launched an investigation into his case following concerns raised by his family regarding his prior contact with their services.
Details provided by coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes indicated that an eyewitness saw Chapman wearing headphones and pacing near the enclosure before entering. Mobile phone footage, believed to be recorded by Chapman, appears to show the interior of the enclosure as he approached the tiger. Park staff secured the animal, a rare Amur tiger named Altai, while paramedics attended to Chapman. A park spokesperson confirmed the tiger would not be euthanized following the incident.
Three separate investigations are underway: a trust-led inquiry into mental health service contact, a health and safety investigation by the City of Doncaster Council, and the ongoing coronial inquest. The incident led to the evacuation of the park, which remains closed with a reopening date not yet confirmed.
The investigation involves the review of witness statements from both the public and park staff provided by South Yorkshire Police. The coroner has also instructed the park to preserve relevant CCTV footage and records of any previous visits by Chapman to the park.
A trust spokesperson stated on Wednesday that they would not comment on whether specific individuals use their services. The senior coroner is currently awaiting a substantial report detailing the full extent of the injuries sustained. The inquest has been adjourned until March 18, 2027.
