North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, to inaugurate the New Yalu River Bridge. During the visit, Kim met with Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of China’s Communist Party, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and trade between the two nations.
The visit coincides with the upcoming 76th anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War on Oct. 25, 1950. The newly opened bridge, which was designed to accommodate two-way traffic 24 hours a day, serves as a replacement for older infrastructure and is intended to facilitate the transport of heavy cargo and container shipments.
While in China, Kim and Wang toured a local car factory and held discussions on strengthening historical ties. According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Kim stated that North Korea is prepared to work with China to expand practical cooperation for the benefit of both populations. South Korea’s Unification Ministry confirmed Kim's arrival in Dandong via the new bridge, though North Korean state media did not immediately carry reports of the trip.
The engagement involves the leaders of two nations, though specific trade volume targets or the exact cost of the bridge project were not reported. The visit serves as a formal signal of alignment between Pyongyang and Beijing. This follows Kim’s recent efforts to provide military support to Russia, including thousands of troops and conventional weapons for the war in Ukraine, in possible exchange for economic and technical aid.
South Korean officials and analysts are monitoring these developments to determine if the focus on economic infrastructure will lead to a reduction in military tensions. The next significant diplomatic milestone is the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for next month in Shenzhen, China. South Korea’s intelligence agency reported a 50% probability of a meeting between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump during that summit, which could influence regional trade and security policies.
