Water levels at Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir in the United States, fell to a record low on Saturday. According to U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) data, the surface elevation dropped to 3,519.91 feet, falling below the previous record set in April 2023.
The decline at Lake Powell follows a similar historic low reached at Lake Mead, the Colorado River's other primary reservoir, one week prior. Officials attribute the decreasing water levels to persistent overconsumption, climbing temperatures, and a record-dry winter. Both reservoirs are currently at levels not seen in nearly seven decades.
As of Saturday, Lake Powell's water level is approximately 30 feet above the point where turbines would stop generating hydroelectric power. The reservoir has dropped more than 20 feet since the beginning of the year. In response to these conditions, federal officials announced on Thursday that they would not release cool water from the Glen Canyon Dam this year, a move intended to prioritize hydropower generation over the protection of threatened native fish downstream.

The tourism industry at Lake Powell has already been impacted, with boat ramps being closed or relocated and marinas moving to deeper waters as the shoreline recedes. Furthermore, if water levels drop another 30 feet, the loss of hydroelectric power would affect the regional energy grid that serves millions of customers across the Southwest.
The federal government and the seven basin states are currently negotiating a long-term strategy to manage the shrinking resource. The decision to halt water releases from the Glen Canyon Dam sets a precedent for prioritizing energy infrastructure over environmental conservation during periods of extreme scarcity. Federal officials warned in April that a major intervention is required to prevent the reservoir from reaching the "minimum power pool" by the end of the year. The outcome of these negotiations and the effectiveness of the proposed 10-year scheme will determine future water rights and availability for the region.
