The water level at Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir in the United States, fell to a record low on Saturday. This milestone follows a similar record low set approximately one week earlier at Lake Mead, the other major reservoir within the Colorado River system.
The decline is the result of persistent water overuse, rising temperatures, and a record-dry winter, according to reported data. These factors have depleted the two reservoirs to their lowest combined levels since May 1957, when the Glen Canyon Dam was under construction. Lake Powell began filling in 1963.
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) shows that Lake Powell's elevation dropped to 3,519.91 feet above sea level on Saturday, surpassing a previous record low set in April 2023. The reservoir's level has decreased by more than 20 feet since the beginning of the year and currently sits about 30 feet above the point where hydroelectric turbines would be forced to stop operating.
For an ordinary household, these water levels could lead to changes in utility costs or mandatory reductions in water usage as states and the federal government negotiate long-term management plans. Beyond residential needs, the shrinking reservoir has forced immediate changes for the tourism and recreation industries. Local marina operators have had to close or move boat ramps and relocate entire marinas to deeper sections of the lake to remain operational.
The ongoing depletion sets a precedent for how the federal government manages interstate water rights during periods of prolonged dryness. The USBR is currently leading efforts to reach a long-term agreement among the seven basin states to stabilize the system. The next major milestones include the potential implementation of the 10-year plan and ongoing monitoring of the 30-foot buffer remaining before hydroelectric production at Glen Canyon Dam is compromised.
