Gov. Jeff Landry (R) stated Wednesday that he is not concerned about potential environmental impacts from a planned $100 billion SpaceX launch facility in Louisiana. The governor emphasized that his primary focus is the economic opportunity the project brings to the state's coast.
The spaceport, which will be the company’s fourth and largest launch site, is scheduled for construction on a former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish. It is designed to serve as the main facility for Starship, a reusable rocket launch system currently under development by SpaceX.
The project follows previous environmental challenges at SpaceX’s first launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. In 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that the company had violated environmental regulations and the Clean Water Act by releasing pollutants into nearby waters. In a statement, SpaceX said it is committed to working with federal and state agencies to protect the Louisiana shoreline and restore wetlands.
The scale of the investment is $100 billion, marking it as a major industrial development for the state of Louisiana. Residents and local businesses would likely notice changes in infrastructure and economic activity starting next year when construction is anticipated to begin. If the project proceeds as planned, the first launch would take place as soon as 2029, establishing a long-term aerospace presence on a site formerly used for oil and gas operations.
The environmental impact remains a point of discussion due to the company's regulatory history in Texas. While Gov. Landry dismissed these concerns in favor of economic growth, the facility's operations will fall under the oversight of state and federal agencies. The "knock-on" effects include the potential for wetland restoration projects promised by SpaceX, though the specific details of these conservation efforts have not been finalized. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with 2029 serving as the earliest target for active launch operations.
