A Madison police officer shot and killed a man during an encounter on a city street near the Wisconsin state Capitol on Wednesday. According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, the incident occurred after officers attempted to contact a man who was allegedly armed with a knife.
Chief Barnes stated that the individual resisted arrest and injured an officer with a knife during the struggle. One officer subsequently discharged their firearm, striking the man. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the individual was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The injured officer was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Per standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Wisconsin, the state Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation will lead the inquiry into the incident. The identities of the officer and the deceased man have not yet been released.
