Madonna won Artist of the Year and Taylor Swift became the most-awarded artist in the show's history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27. The ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, featured the debut of the Artist Director Honor, a new accolade presented to Swift for her work behind the camera. The event marked the first time in nearly a decade that the awards were held in Los Angeles.
The program opened with Madonna’s first performance at the show in over 20 years, featuring Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Madonna performed "Bring Your Love" with Carpenter and "Danceteria" with Charli XCX, incorporating visuals from her recent album "Confessions II." Later in the evening, Madonna accepted the Artist of the Year award, while Swift accepted Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia."
Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honor, which recognizes artists who advance visual storytelling through music videos. Organizers noted that Swift has previously won four Best Director VMAs and received seven nominations in that category for works including "All Too Well: The Short Film" and "Anti-Hero." During the broadcast, Swift premiered the music video for her new single "Patient Zero," which stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. With her wins Sunday, Swift surpassed Beyoncé’s record of 30 awards to become the most-awarded artist in the history of the program.
Viewers were also presented with a tribute to the late musician Dolly Parton, who died recently following a battle with cancer. Kacey Musgraves performed Parton’s 1974 song "I Will Always Love You" during the memorial segment. Additionally, the surviving members of the band Nirvana—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—were recognized with the Video Vanguard Award for their contributions to the medium, a distinction that includes the band's catalog of videos like "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
The broadcast included international and emerging artists, such as LISA, who won Best Pop for "Dream feat. Kentaro Sakaguchi" and performed her single "SaWaDiKa." The production was managed by Gunpowder & Sky and executive produced by a team including Jesse Ignjatovic and Bruce Gillmer, with sponsorship from brands including Spotify and Under Armour. The awards were broadcast live on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+. Following the live event, the program was scheduled for global release on Paramount+ and MTV on Monday, September 28.
Next steps for the winners include the ongoing promotion of new projects debuted during the show, such as Swift's "Patient Zero" video. Madonna's "Bring Your Love" also secured a win for Best Collaboration. There are no further 2026 VMA ceremonies scheduled, as the event concluded on Sunday evening.
