Federal authorities arrested a man in Las Vegas on Tuesday who is accused of threatening several people while wearing a Chucky-style mask in Philadelphia earlier this month. Zymire Hughes, 22, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and is currently being held at the Clark County Detention Center.
The arrest follows a series of incidents on August 12 near Philadelphia City Hall. Police reported that a masked individual chased and antagonized at least six people during a 15-minute span in the early morning hours. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner previously noted that Hughes had ties to both Nevada and California.
According to investigators, the incidents began at 5:18 a.m. at 15th and Chestnut streets. Police said Hughes entered a Dunkin' shop shortly after but was denied service because of the mask. Surveillance footage later showed him running toward people at Penn Square. In one instance, police said he approached a female jogger and asked if she was "ready to die," causing her to flee and sustain a leg injury.
Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said Hughes appeared to use a cellphone to film the encounters. Following the series of threats, the suspect reportedly fled toward Suburban Station. District Attorney Krasner stated that Hughes is expected to face charges including aggravated assault, a felony charge often involving serious bodily injury or the threat of it, due to the injury reported by one of the victims.
For the residents of Philadelphia and the specific individuals involved, the legal proceedings will determine the accountability for the 15-minute period of reported threats on August 12.
