An autographed road jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals sold privately for $14 million, according to an announcement by Hunt Auctions on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. The auction house stated the transaction represents the highest price ever paid for a piece of basketball memorabilia. The red Chicago Bulls jersey was worn by Jordan during Game 2 of the series against the Utah Jazz on June 5, 1998, where he scored 37 points.
The sale was conducted as a private treaty agreement between the auction house and Miami real estate investor Ron Firman. According to David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, the jersey has a "succinct chain of custody," having changed hands only once since a private collector originally purchased it from the Chicago Bulls in 2003. This latest transaction surpasses the previous basketball record set two weeks prior, when a non-autographed Jordan jersey from Game 3 of the same series sold for $12.3 million.
Items from Jordan's 1997-98 season, chronicled in the 2020 documentary series "The Last Dance," have consistently commanded high prices in the collector market. Previous sales include a Game 1 jersey for $10.1 million in 2022 and a pair of Game 2 sneakers for $2.2 million in 2023. The only item of sports memorabilia known to have sold for more is a 1932 Babe Ruth jersey, which fetched $24.12 million in 2024.
David Hunt noted that the market for Michael Jordan items has now transitioned into an "elite asset class" comparable to fine art. While there are no currently reported dates for the next major Jordan-related auction, three separate $10-million-plus jersey sales have occurred in the last four years.
