Micron Technology announced on Thursday plans to invest $10 billion over the next 10 years into a new research laboratory in Boise, Idaho. The facility, named Micron Research Labs, is intended to advance memory technologies and compute systems while supporting the company’s future chip manufacturing capabilities.
The investment follows a period of high demand for high-bandwidth memory, which provides data to artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. Micron and other major manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have reported increased demand due to the expansion of AI infrastructure. The Trump administration has also emphasized domestic semiconductor production to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and maintain a position in the AI sector.
Micron stated that the Boise lab will connect with its existing research sites in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Europe, and other parts of the United States. The company plans to break ground on the facility in 2027. Once completed, the site is designed to house hundreds of researchers and serve as a venue for international semiconductor workshops and conferences.
On a larger scale, this $10 billion commitment is part of a broader $250 billion Micron has pledged for manufacturing and research across the United States.
