A Minnesota judge sentenced Vance Boelter to life in prison on Thursday for the 2024 murders of State Representative Melissa Hortman (D-Brooklyn Park) and her husband, Mark Hortman. The sentencing followed Boelter's conviction on two counts of first-degree murder. Under Minnesota law, the sentence carries no possibility of parole.
During the hearing in Hennepin County District Court, family members of the victims provided impact statements. Witnesses described the personal and community loss resulting from the deaths. Melissa Hortman had served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2005 and was a former Speaker of the House.
Law enforcement officials testified during the trial that the killings occurred at the Hortman residence. Prosecutors stated that Boelter was apprehended shortly after the incident. Defense attorneys had previously raised questions regarding the defendant's mental health status, but the court ruled Boelter competent to stand trial and face sentencing.
