Missouri Deputy Attorney General Shaun Mackelprang was found alive in the Wyoming wilderness on Wednesday, six days after he was reported missing during a solo hike. Authorities located the 55-year-old official near Scott Lake in the Wind River mountain range and transported him from the area via helicopter.
Mackelprang had traveled to the region to summit Gannett Peak, the highest point in Wyoming at nearly 14,000 feet. The Sublette County Sheriff's Office reported that he began his trek on August 20 from the Green River Lake trailhead in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Search operations commenced after he failed to return and his vehicle was discovered abandoned at the trailhead.
The search effort involved ground crews, drones, aircraft, and volunteers from the nonprofit Tip Top Search and Rescue. Mackelprang's brother, Romel Mackelprang, told the Cowboy State Daily that the hiker successfully reached the summit but became dehydrated and disoriented during his descent. He stated that bad weather occurred during the return trip and his brother ended up at the wrong lake.
The incident highlights the physical risks associated with high-altitude backcountry hiking in the Wind River Range, a location local officials describe as a solitary and difficult route. For the individual hiker and their family, the immediate impact included six days of uncertainty followed by a medical evacuation. The hiker's brother noted that while the official was found alive, the extent of any lasting physical injuries or the specific medical treatment required upon his return to Missouri remains unknown.
