A lightning strike in Margate, Florida, killed a 31-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter on Sunday afternoon. The victims, identified by family as Kenya and Kennedi Glasgow, were struck while walking toward a relative's home during an incoming storm.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. ET as the family of four arrived for a dinner at the home of Kameron Glasgow’s aunt. Kameron Glasgow, the husband and father of the victims, stated that the family was attempting to enter the house to avoid increasing rain when the lightning hit the lawn. Glasgow reported feeling the electric current travel through the ground, though he was not seriously injured.
According to a press release from the Margate Police Department, first responders arrived at the scene and performed CPR on both the mother and daughter. They were transported to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The couple’s other child, a twin daughter named Kensli, survived the event.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that while approximately 37 million lightning strikes occur in the United States annually, the probability of an individual being struck is less than one in a million. The CDC further reports that approximately 90 percent of individuals struck by lightning survive the event, making fatalities statistically rare.
