A gunman remains at large following the fatal shooting of a motorist on the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Authorities identified the victim as 46-year-old Koran Irvin of Valley Cottage, New York, who was an off-duty employee of the utility company Con Edison.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on the bridge connecting New York and New Jersey, leading to a closure of the crossing for several hours. Law enforcement sources stated the incident appeared to be the result of a road rage dispute between two drivers on an entrance ramp.
According to investigators and surveillance video, Irvin was seen nearly colliding his blue Volkswagen Golf with another vehicle before a lone gunshot was fired through his rear passenger window. The bullet appeared to strike the driver's seat headrest and then Irvin's shoulder. His vehicle eventually came to a stop after striking a median, while the other driver continued across the bridge.
The incident affected commuters and commercial drivers on the bridge, as all lanes were closed from approximately 7 p.m. until 1 a.m. the following morning.
For the family of Koran Irvin and his colleagues at Con Edison, the event resulted in the loss of the 46-year-old worker. For the general public, the case serves as a documented instance of how traffic disputes on major infrastructure can escalate into lethal violence and regional transit disruption.
Police spent several hours canvassing the bridge for ballistics and reviewing camera footage to identify a suspect. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has not yet released a description of the shooter.
