Elon Musk reported spending at least $442 million to support Republican candidates and causes during the 2026 midterm election cycle, which resulted in Democrats winning control of both the U.S. House and Senate on November 3. Following the election results, Musk posted on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.”
The spending represents a significant increase from the approximately $291 million Musk contributed during the 2024 presidential election cycle. While he initially stated in May 2025 that he would reduce his political spending, federal records through October 14, 2026, show his donations reached at least $474 million. His net worth is estimated by Forbes at approximately $901.7 billion.
A substantial portion of Musk's funds targeted races in Texas, including more than $200 million to support Republican Ken Paxton in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat. Paxton lost to Democrat James Talarico, marking the first Democratic statewide victory in Texas in several decades. Additionally, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Greg Abbott in the Texas gubernatorial race. Hinojosa has proposed a moratorium on new data center construction, a policy shift that would affect Musk’s interests in artificial intelligence and space-based computing.
In Texas, the election of Hinojosa and Talarico signals a change in the state's approach to energy and technology infrastructure. Residents may see a direct impact on the development of data centers, as Hinojosa has advocated for a construction moratorium due to concerns about environmental impact and rising energy costs. This would halt new facilities intended to provide the computing power for AI development, potentially affecting jobs and local tax revenue in the technology sector. For ordinary households, this policy is framed by supporters as a way to stabilize electricity bills by limiting the strain on the power grid.
The next steps for the incoming Congress include leadership elections and the transition of committee chairmanships. Robert Garcia, the incoming House Oversight chair, has already issued a public warning to Republicans to prepare for investigations. In Texas, the transition to the Hinojosa administration will begin ahead of the new term, while at the federal level, the new Democratic majorities in the House and Senate are scheduled to be seated in January 2027. Musk has suggested he may pivot toward developing "data centers in space" through his companies SpaceX and xAI to bypass terrestrial building restrictions.
