Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are shaping projections for Hurricane Isaias to closely match an artificial intelligence model developed by Google DeepMind. The decision to follow the Google DeepMind AI model (the newest iteration of which is WeatherNext 3) alongside traditional physics-based systems comes as the storm moves toward the northeastern Gulf Coast, where it is likely to make landfall.
The NHC began integrating AI weather prediction systems into its operations as guidance during the 2025 hurricane season. While traditional models like the Global Forecast System (GFS) and the European model use mathematical equations to simulate atmospheric physics, AI models are trained on historical data and current observations to identify patterns. NHC Director Michael Brennan stated that the AI models have recently shown more consistency between model runs compared to physics-based guidance.
For Hurricane Isaias, the NHC issued a forecast on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, predicting it would reach Category 2 intensity before the system was even named. During that period, traditional models provided conflicting projections and generally suggested a weaker storm with a different path. The current reliance on DeepMind follows the 2025 season, when the AI model correctly anticipated the rapid intensification of Hurricane Melissa almost three days before it arrived in Jamaica.
The technology is faster than physics-based versions, which require solving complex atmospheric equations on supercomputers. According to NHC Science Operation Officer Wallace Hogsett, this efficiency could eventually allow forecasters to run thousands of possible scenarios to better estimate uncertainty for a single storm. For the general public, this means that initial storm advisories may now carry higher intensity ratings earlier in a storm's lifecycle, intended to provide more preparation time for significant weather events.
However, NHC officials noted that AI remains a "tool in the toolbox" rather than a replacement for human meteorologists or traditional physics models. While AI performed well during the 2025 season, officials cited other instances where traditional models were more accurate. The NHC has worked directly with Google to train the WeatherNext 3 model using the agency's "best track" analysis data to improve its ability to predict storm intensity. Forecasters will continue to evaluate the performance of Hurricane Isaias as it approaches the coast.
