El Niño is defined by warmer-than-average water temperatures along the equator in the Pacific Ocean, which shifts atmospheric patterns. These shifts typically move the jet stream—the atmospheric current that directs storms—south of its usual position. NOAA notes that while a record-strength El Niño increases the probability of specific weather outcomes, it does not guarantee historically intense weather events.
Current forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center for December through February indicate higher probabilities for above-average temperatures across the northern United States, from the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest. Conversely, the southern tier of the country is expected to see increased precipitation and cooler trends. Florida faces a higher risk of severe thunderstorms, while other Gulf Coast areas may see less activity than normal.
For residents in the southern tier, including Southern California and the Southeast, the forecast predicts wetter-than-normal conditions. This shift means a higher likelihood of rain, sleet, or freezing rain, which can impact daily commutes and infrastructure. According to Climate Central, annual snowfall has already decreased in nearly two-thirds of the U.S. since 1970 due to long-term warming trends, a factor that meteorologists say will interact with the current El Niño cycle to determine final winter outcomes.

While northern residents might see a reprieve from extreme cold, those in the Southeast face the highest confidence levels for increased moisture.
